Rape Support

The trauma experienced by people following a rape or any sexual abuse will usually appear immediately after the incident, although in some cases, it may occur after quite a long period of time.

You may find that you are having difficulties, such as:-

  • Nightmares and flashbacks, anxiety or panic attacks, phobias, with self harming, OCD, the use of alcohol or drugs to excess, and depression, insomnia, or eating disorders.

You may have feelings of:-

  • Guilt, shock, shame, anger, helplessness, together with loss of control or upheaval, confusion, powerlessness, disbelief and divided loyalty, with low self-esteem and self-confidence, and changes in diet.

These may be some of the problems which you are encountering:-

Sexual effects:

  • You may find sometimes a decrease in sexual activity, or even occasionally stop having sexual intercourse altogether.
  • There may be difficulties of arousal, or pain during intercourse.
  • Any sexual activity can bring back terrifying memories.

Physical effects:

  • Chronic stomach pains, more intense menstrual cramps, pain during intercourse.
  • Headaches, migraines and all-round aches and body pains.
Emotional effects:
  • Denying the horrifying events to yourself and others, and avoiding talking about particular situations.
  • Unintentional repetitions of the assault through memories or nightmares which force victims to experience their horror again.
Medical Help and Treatment:

There are a variety of help sources available for sufferers of rape or sexual abuse. You, however, as the individual must take the first step, both by wanting to get help and by being willing to discuss your experiences.

Individual counselling and therapy have proven to be effective treatments for abuse victims, and both the Emotional Freedom Technique and the Neuro Linguistic Programming have had impressive results in helping to reduce the trauma caused.

You may be asking yourself the question: “Why should I get help now? “

Here are some of the common reasons:

  • Death of an abuser, or the loss of a family member,
  • Child birth,
  • Inability to function,
  • A recent assault, and the risk to others,
  • Dealing with other issues,
  • Growth as a person,
  • Television or media article,
  • New partner.

It is, unfortunately, very common for the abuse to have been committed by a family member. If you have been a victim, remember that you are by no means alone, and are definitely not to blame.

I can offer a warm and sympathetic approach, as someone who has specialized in this area and who has an understanding of the issues arising from rape and sexual abuse. I have a certificate of training from the Colchester Rape Crisis Line.

I am someone who will be empathic to your needs, I will listen without judgement or finding fault with your response to what has happened, and I do have the knowledge which will be needed for you to start your healing process.
